Terry and Zach provide a general lay of the land for the ITProTV MALC course.

Welcome to ITProTV. I'm your host Don Pezet. [CROSSTALK]. >> You're watching ITProTV. >> Hello again, and thank you for choosing ITProTV, helping you learn wherever you go. I'm your host, Zach Memos. Very excited to be your host for ITIL, managing across the life cycle. And we'll be diving into logistics, setup and expectations with our very own Terry Decker. And he's right there. [LAUGH] >> Yup happy to be here Zach. As usual we're going to setup this course by talking about the basic logistics of things. Work to orient yourself towards the class files, what you expect from the exam, what do you expect out of the course? And without further adieu, let's just kind of dive in here. This is the Capstone course for all of the ITIL curriculum. It's the final stage, if you will, before you get to the ITIL expert credential. So, the prerequisite before you can take this exam and get credit for the exam are 17 credit hours. We'll get to that a little bit later. And you see, we're moving up the Blooms taxonomy scale. You have to apply your knowledge a little bit more expertly as the phrase goes. So, when we did foundations, we were at the lower end of this. We need to remember things and be able to understand some concepts. The intermediate level exams that you've taken dealt with applying knowledge. And making sure that you could analyze a given situation based on a scenario. Well, what we're doing here in the MALC exam is taking it a little bit higher and looking at synthesizing, if you will. Evaluating a situation and creating new knowledge, if you will, applying it effectively. And primarily that's done through this case study. Not just scenarios but a full blown case study where you get very familiar with this organization. It's a financial services organization. It's a challenging exam but it's also a rewarding exam in that once passed, you get a very special credential called ITIL expert. >> And everybody wants to be an ITIL expert I would think. >> Yeah, that's right. >> Who wants to get in ITIL of course. >> That's right. >> Yeah.. >> So as we've done with the intermediate level exams and courses. There certainly are gonna be my presentation of theory and lecture approach giving real world examples to these concepts. The primary difference is we approach marker however is that we are not really bringing in new information. It's really just going to be how we can synthesize this information towards some common goal. So a little bit less importance is my lecture. It's gonna be a high expectation that you're gonna be diving into the practice exams, the mock tests if you will. You're gonna be doing some exercises in getting real familiar with this case study. The good news is, is this case study that we use throughout this portion of the exam prep, is the exact same case study you'll get on the real exam. So, you can memorize this thing. You'll know this company inside out before you even go o take the exam. And then of course, the scenarios based on this case study, this company if you will, that tease out some more details that you have to approach in the actual questions. >> Okay. >> So a lot of good information for you to sink your teeth into in this course. All this material is owned and operated by AXELOS, the ones that own the copyright material, it's called ITIL curriculum. A brief history, as you know ITIL has been around since the late 80's. It's gone through some upgrades over the years. We're at now at version three since 2011. The only significant update to the ITIL material since 2011 has been the addition of the ITIL practitioner course that came out last spring. And that course helps answer the question, how would I go about answering the question about adopting ITIL. You remember the five stages of the life cycle? Again, no new information here. I'm going to be, certainly, touching on the life cycle stages, and how they integrate with each other. Those inner points of integration, managing across the life cycle necessarily means you're gonna be looking at this at a 5,000-foot view. Holistically, looking at an organizational challenges from a strategic point of view. So it's not just service strategy. It's looking at IT service management through the lens of Strategic application and strategic analysis. So again, kinda challenging, but also quite rewarding cuz it gives you that nice big view of ITIL. So, The Qualification Scheme. All these is all maintained in accredited status from AXELOS on through the exam institutes. Exam institutes then accredit training organization, I'm here representing PassionIT Group, an accredited training organization. They go through the rigors of designing the curriculum according to the syllabus as published by the exam institutes. They are audited for compliance with that syllabus and also audited for compliance in delivery. So that gives the PassionIT group the accreditation to send me as an accredited trainer to deliver this for ITProTV. Obviously, all this is works together to mean that there's quality control throughout the system through the exams, through the curriculum development, mapping back to a specific syllabus. >> Perfect. >> Yup. Now, it kinda looks like a house here, the house that ITIL built. >> [LAUGH] >> If you have a look near the bottom of this, you've got Foundation, of course. That's where you would expect to see the foundation. It's the bottom of the house. That is a prerequisite. You must have foundation. As one of your sets of credits. You get two credits for that. You'll see ITIL Practitioner can get you three credits. As you go up through these courses, you get different degrees of credits. So on the Capability Module side here, you'll see Service Offerings and Agreements, Release, Control and Validation, Planning, Protection and Optimization, Operational Support and Analysis. Those Capability Modules give you four credits each. All available on ITProTV, by the way. >> Right, and we have the sample paper reviews as well that we did. >> That's right. So again, it's expectation before you take mount you've collected 17 credits. However you get those credits two of them must be foundation, and then you just gotta go get 15 more. Do you take these four capability ones, which is 16 a little overkill? Do you take five life cycle ones, >> Right. >> To get those? When you have a total of 17, You are eligible to take the MALC exam. And with the MALC exam, successful passing the MALC exam, gives you five credits, that totals 22. Those 22 credits get you that magic credential called ITIL expert. To be an accredited trainer you must hold the expert credential. So, if you're in an accredited training class you know that your instructor has gone through the accredited training up to the expert level. Now, in my particular case I've happened to take both sides of these. I've taken all the lifecycle ones. I've taken all the capability ones. I've also had practitioner and foundation. And I bring that knowledge to the lecture for MALC. You need to do that too. You've gone on some path, to get here. Maybe you've taken life cycle modules. Maybe you've taken some capability modules. Maybe you've mixed and matched them, which is totally fine. But you're gonna be bringing that knowledge to this course. And more importantly, holistically bringing that same knowledge to the MALC exam. As I mentioned before MALC brings no new information. It's gonna be the trick of the trade here is going to be how we use this information in some sort of synthesis, creating knowledge, creating application for this knowledge. So just a little bit step further. Here they are again played out. The ITIL foundations through the life cycle modules. One of the differences between the life cycle modules and the capability modules is the life cycle modules are one to one relationship to the core publications. What I mean by that is there's a course called service strategy. There's a core publication called service strategy. There's a course called service transition. There's a book called service transition. So one to one relationship there. The capability modules are based on a blend of the core books. As an example, service offering agreements takes some from service strategy and some from service design. And mixes them into a practical approach. So, it's more like doing. You get a bit more credit for those as well. And a little bit deeper dive into the activities involved in those specific processes that are being discussed. MALC again takes that a step further. So, if you're taking a Service Strategy Exam, or you're taking a Service Offerings and Agreement Exam, you kinda know the boundaries of the exam. It's just that subject matter you just took. MALC is gonna be a bit more challenging in that the subject matter is all five books all the time. And how they blend together and how they're distinguishing from each other. So that makes MALC challenging but, again, it also makes it rewarding. Because you're getting to this practical sense of strategically looking at ITIL as a strategic asset. And that's really what we're trying to position MALC for. >> Perfect. >> So the exam itself is virtually the same as the intermediates you've already taken. Except there's ten questions and not eight. And one big difference is there's this case study. It's about seven pages long. And that case study forms the basis for eight of the ten questions. As many as two of the questions can be away from the topic of the case study. So you get eight questions associated with the case study. Each question has it's own separate scenario in between the case study and the question if you will. So there's that extra layer of Information. Certainly the latter episodes when we start approaching exam preparation. The latter episodes in this series are gonna deal with an approach to taking and mastering this exam technique. Where you have a case study and you have the scenario. So we'll get to that in due time. You get two hours to take the exam. So ten questions, 120 minutes, that's about 12 minutes per question. You don't wanna be learning the case study for the first time when you set this exam. This case study needs to be something you know very well already. And again, the good news is the same case study that's used in this course is the very same case study you'll get on the exam. So there's really no excuse for not knowing that case study inside and out. Know it well. Therefore, you won't be parsing it while you're managing your time on the real exam. Very important there. You still gotta get a 70%. That's 35 out of 50, so if you do the math here, again, you gotta get 70%, that's 35. There's ten questions. If you get six three-point answers, that's 18. And you got four more to go. So you can get 20 out of that, that's 38, all right. So maybe you can have seven three point answers to get 21 points with three to go, gives you the 15. Kind of do the math there. So perfection is not required, 70% obviously is not 100%. But if you were to get a zero answer or a one answer then you're margin of error is shrinking. You gonna have to go find some extra five point answers along the way. So as you approach the exam, a great approach is to get really good and eliminating the ones and the zeroes. So that you're always in this little wheelhouse of choosing between the best answer and the next best answer. If you're here, it's because you've already had some success on intermediate level exams. So you know how that row is hoed. So get your hoe out >> [LAUGH] >> And work a little harder. >> And I'm from Iowa, and believe me, you need to be hoeing. >> [LAUGH] >> That's right. So that's kinda the lay of the land. That's the lay of the land, what you expect. One other big thing is, you're own self study is important. You'll see episode files up above, there's some up above right now. As you look at your episode files, you can download the sample papers. There are process charts and various things that can help you study. And also help you have in front of you while you're watching these lectures. It's a good visual reference, including the course handbook. Which has the same PowerPoint as going through here. You can take notes and whatnot. So I highly encourage you to download those materials. And as you get into each episode, you'll find additional materials for knowledge checks and exercises. I highly encourage you to go there.
