The Microsoft PowerShell is a secondary command line interface found in most Microsoft operating systems. The purpose of the PowerShell is to provide a much more feature rich scripting and automation environment than was previously possible in the base command shell. This series introduces the viewer to the PowerShell and its basic functions. It then moves in to specific areas like managing DNS, DHCP and Active Directory along with their typical commands.

1 00:00:00,,376 [MUSIC] 2 00:00:08,,270 Welcome to ITProTV's PowerShell for Sys Admins program. 3 00:00:12,,130 What we're doing is we're recording a series of videos that are covering 4 00:00:16,,990 how to use the Windows PowerShell. 5 00:00:17,,400 We're seeing a bigger and bigger push from Microsoft use PowerShell for 6 00:00:21,,150 all sorts of things, and the product's really advanced over the years. 7 00:00:25,,890 It's wonderful for doing things like automation and 8 00:00:27,,980 scripting activities to occur in sequence that you don't have to go through and 9 00:00:30,,130 do them over and over again yourself. 10 00:00:33,,440 Sometimes you have multiple servers that you want to configure and 11 00:00:35,,010 you don't want to go and do each one individually. 12 00:00:38,,770 We can write a PowerShell Script and it'll knock them all out for us in one go. 13 00:00:41,,340 It's really pretty cool. 14 00:00:43,,200 But it is a lot different than the command prompt that we're used to. 15 00:00:47,,870 Or maybe you're not used to the command prompt at all. 16 00:00:48,,120 Maybe you're an all GUI person, plenty of people are these days. 17 00:00:52,,700 So the Powershell can be a little daunting, 18 00:00:53,,530 and that's what this program aims to fix. 19 00:00:56,,510 We're gonna take a look at, well, some of the basics first. 20 00:00:59,,300 We'll start out with just what the PowerShell is and how the interface works. 21 00:01:03,,300 The interface is pretty neat, and there's some really cool tools and shortcuts that 22 00:01:07,,260 we can use just right in the basic interface that can help us out a lot. 23 00:01:11,,580 From there, we're going to start advancing into other topics. 24 00:01:13,,530 Let me show you the outline that we've kind of worked up for this. 25 00:01:16,,000 Unlike a lot of shows on ITProTV, this show is not built around a particular 26 00:01:20,,620 certification, so we're going freestyle here. 27 00:01:22,,340 We're basically adding whatever we feel is appropriate, and 28 00:01:25,,440 by we, I mean most of this is myself and our other host Mike Roderick. 29 00:01:30,,190 We've taken a look at the various PowerShell commands that we think most 30 00:01:34,,980 people need to know it to be prepared for the exams and prepared for the real world. 31 00:01:37,,790 So, like I said, 32 00:01:38,,950 we're gonna start out right here with the introduction to the PowerShell. 33 00:01:41,,480 We'll just go over some of those basic commands, general syntax, 34 00:01:45,,770 how we can use the interface. 35 00:01:47,,900 From there, we'll start to focus on the more practical skills. 36 00:01:50,,720 We'll have a series of videos that are focusing on server management. 37 00:01:53,,833 These are generic tasks that are performed on every Windows server. 38 00:01:56,,457 I might be adding roles, removing features, managing services, 39 00:02:00,,660 whatever it is that we need to do as part of the day to day operations of a server. 40 00:02:04,,034 Then we're gonna focus in on DNS, how to get DNS, domain naming system, configured 41 00:02:09,,020 on a server, and how to work with zones and other records all from the PowerShell. 42 00:02:14,,610 We'll proceed to DHCP, dynamic host configuration protocol, and 43 00:02:17,,080 how to manage it. 44 00:02:19,,150 And then the big one, active directory. 45 00:02:21,,890 I know it doesn't look that big here in the outline, but 46 00:02:22,,620 there's actually quite a bit to it. 47 00:02:24,,520 Creating the active directory, working with user accounts, 48 00:02:27,,000 groups, organizational units, group policy objects, 49 00:02:30,,805 all of that stuff that's buried inside the active directory, you can completely 50 00:02:33,,785 interface with it via the PowerShell, and then we're going to tackle Hyper-V. 51 00:02:37,,265 How do you get Hyper-V installed? 52 00:02:40,,595 How to manage virtual machines, creating them, starting, stopping, taking 53 00:02:43,,635 snapshots, all those other things that are part of the routine operation of Hyper-V. 54 00:02:48,,745 Now, depending on when you watch this show, 55 00:02:51,,740 there may just be these videos available. 56 00:02:54,,340 But if it's been a year or 57 00:02:57,,110 however long, you may see that we have quite a bit more content than that. 58 00:03:00,,070 And that's because this isn't based around an exam set of objectives. 59 00:03:03,,660 We're not waiting on Microsoft to tell us what to cover. 60 00:03:05,,090 Instead, we're just figuring it out. 61 00:03:08,,460 Whatever we feel like needs to be in there we're throwing it in there. 62 00:03:10,,590 And that means that if you have any ideas, if there was something you 63 00:03:13,,980 didn't see on that outline that you want covered, let us know. 64 00:03:16,,370 Post in the Q & A forums, 65 00:03:18,,510 you can just go right in there into the Microsoft forum and post and say hey, Don, 66 00:03:21,,770 I'd really like it if you did a section on Microsoft SQL or Microsoft Exchange, 67 00:03:25,,500 you covered some of the PowerShell stuff that's available from those. 68 00:03:28,,230 If that's something that interests you, great, throw it on there. 69 00:03:31,,870 It's not on any of the exams that our site prepares you for, 70 00:03:33,,610 at least not yet, but it's something that's useful to know and we'll do it, 71 00:03:37,,050 we'll film it and get thrown on there. 72 00:03:39,,140 So if it's not on the outline, just let us know, we'll work to get it added. 73 00:03:43,,333 But these are kind of the major ones. 74 00:03:44,,519 These are definitely ones that you need to know if you're getting ready for 75 00:03:48,,917 the 70-410, 70-411 and 70-412 exams. 76 00:03:51,,029 And so we try to basically wrap all those together, but 77 00:03:55,,083 we're definitely willing to extend that as needed. 78 00:03:58,,034 All right, so that's what we're about to jump into, and without further delay, 79 00:04:02,,625 we'll go ahead and get started. 80 00:04:03,,724 [MUSIC]
